Press Sun-Bulletin Thursday, March 7, 1991 2 Conservative Party attacks Moynihan's stance on war NEW YORK (AP) New York's Conservative Party, appealing for money, took a full-page advertisem*nt Wednesday in The New York Times attacking Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan's vote against war in the Persian Gulf. Party Chairman Michael Long said he hoped the idea would be adopted by other conservatives nationwide to attack Democrats who voted against going to war in the gulf. "Time and again, Pat Moynihan voted against a strong America," the ad said of the New York Democrat. "We should never forget." Moynihan spokesman Lawrence O'Donnell called the ad "silly" and "thoroughly illegal." He said a complaint would be filed with the Federal Elections Commission charing, among other things, that the advertisem*nt didn't identify who had paid for it.

Long said the Conservative Party had paid for the ad. "It's clear from the ad," Long said. The ad asks that donations be sent to the Gov. party. liario M.

Cuomo, considered a potential 1992 Democratic presidential contender, "even for the Conservative Party" the advertiserepresented bad taste." Long said the ad had cost the party $42,000 and that he hoped to receive enough contributions to run the same advertisem*nt in other newspapers in New York. "If the Moynihans of this world had prevailed our troops would have been sitting in the gulf right now with slingshots," Long said in defending the ad. The Conservative Party chairman said that if Cuomo didn't like the advertisem*nt, he could buy one of his own to defend Moynihan. "They're captives and prisoners of the liberal wing of their party," Long said of Cuomo and Moynihan. Cuomo, like Moynihan, was a supporter of allowing economic sanctions against Iraq more time to work.

Long said Wednesday that the initial response to the advertisem*nt was mixed. "I've been thanked, but I've also been called a communist and a Long said. "I also got a phone call from a person who said that thanks to the ad he's sending a thousand dollars to Pat Moynihan," Long said. "I'm sure Pat may not like the heat, but he's going to benefit from it, from the crowd he wants to benefit Long said. Democrats fight Cuomo's budget cuts ALBANY (AP) Gov.
