The Full Sun (Solstice) Followed by the Full Moon! Will You Accept the Spotlight (1)

"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer." F. Scott Fitzgerald

This week I’m looking at the fullness of both Luminaries — the Sun and the Moon. Summer Solstice brings us the longest day of the year on 6/20, when the Sun moves into Cancer. Then we get a glorious Full Moon in Capricorn the very next night. And it’s a special Full Moon because it will be void of course. Of course! Let’s explore all this.

(To get additional information about what areas of life will be most impacted, check to see where this energy is happening in your natal chart. We’re talking about Cancer and Capricorn.)

I’m giddy-excited for the energy this week! I love Summer Solstice more than any other day of the year. This is the solar equivalent to a Full Moon. On Solstice, the Sun has come to the center of the yearly cycle in the same way the Moon reaches the fullness of her cycle each month. In both cases, these are days of big energy AND of energetic resets.

The Sun owns the day on Summer Solstice and invites us to celebrate the fullness of summertime bounty. Known as Litha or Midsummer to many pagan sects, this is a day when people hold festivals to celebrate fertility, abundance, and all that is good in life. People gather to share food, dance, and light bonfires. This is a day when fruit is ripe, and we’re each invited to harvest the fruit we planted in Spring.

Summer Solstice is a time of celebration. Absolutely! But there’s another aspect of the Solstice that many forget in the midst of all the merry-making. This is the longest day of the year, which means that after all the bonfires are dowsed, the daylight hours will slowly decrease, leading us toward the long nights of winter. And so it goes.

The Solstice reminds us to celebrate what we have while we have it. It invites us to look around and marvel at all there is to be seen, especially our own accomplishments. On this day, we get the chance to stand in the spotlight. Take time this week to look at your life, REALLY see. What do each of us have to sing about? Solstice energy will be felt most strongly in the house occupied by Cancer.

Like Full Moon energy, Summer Solstice also allows us to consider a re-set of sorts. We still have months before Winter takes hold and sends us shivering to sit at the hearth. Now, during this time of full illumination, we’re invited to consider what we’ll do with the remaining bright months. What do we still hope to harvest? After the festivities wind down, this is an excellent time to set goals for the last half of the year, especially those connected to our Cancer house. And remember that Cancer is ruled by the Moon, so don’t forget goals involving issues like emotional and/or physical well-being, forming or breaking habits, and relationships with maternal figures.

I could go on and on about Summer Solstice, there’s so much energy that comes with it, but this Full Moon is oh-so interesting!

As is true of the Sun during Solstice, the Moon shines at her fullest and then begins to lose light as she begins her waning phase. I like to see the actual night of the Full Moon as a time for us to see into the shadows. What aspects of our inner world might we let go of? What emotional growth can we celebrate? While we still have the light, what do we want to manifest? No matter how you use the light of the Moon, keep in mind that Luna doesn’t only represent our emotions (a misconception held by many). Astrologically, the Moon also represents our body, our habits, our instincts, and our mothers.

As if all this isn’t enough for the week, this Full Moon will be wild! It’s what astrologers call void-of-course. This is when a planet is at the end of a sign and isn’t forming any relationship with any other planet for the remainder of it’s time in the sign, in this case Capricorn. The Void Moon is all on her own, and you better believe she’ll make the most of her freedom! Prepare for a wild ride! AND consider how you might like to cut loose!

I’m very interested in seeing how the Void Moon will play out this week. Capricorn can be…I hate to say it…stodgy. The sign of the Goat tends to be conservative, wanting to take things slowly, laying a solid foundation as it goes. (I’m being rough on Capricorn which is actually part fish, part goat…how unexpected is that?!) The Sea-goat wants to climb mountains and reach high goals. With this void-of-course Moon, we’re being offered the gift of stepping out of our logic and letting our instincts guide us up the shadowy, nighttime mountain. We’re invited to plunge into our subconscious and let our inner truth lead us. It’s a time to try out that wild idea that seemed too risky. Be daring! Trust!

This week’s Full Moon reminds me of that old game—Marco Polo.

This is the one week of the year when both Luminaries will be full. Imagine that we’re each standing in the spotlight and taking a bow. We’ve accomplished so much. In this light, we can look around and assess both what we’ve achieved and what still holds possibility. And we can use the brevity of these brilliant cosmic events to remind us that the wheel continues to turn. Winter will be here sooner than seems possible. So, carpe diem!

Happy Solstice, everyone! May your bonfires burn brightly!

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!”

— A song I used to sing in Sunday School

A little something extra

Possible support heading into this brilliant week:

These recommendations are for informational and educational purposes. Do not consume anything mentioned here without consulting an appropriate healthcare practitioner. I am not diagnosing or prescribing for anyone. I am not a licensed healthcare practitioner.
  1. Bach flowers: To promote joyfulness—Agrimony; to foster inner certainty—Cerato; to increase creative idealism—Clematis; to expand a sense of purposefulness—Wild Oat; and to get in touch with inner courage and release any hidden fears—Mimulus.

  2. Herbs for tea and offering: This week is about the bounty of mid-summer, so it’s the perfect time for all fruit drinks—lemonade (add mint or thyme sprigs for extra joy), strawberry punch (toss in a little ginger and chunks of fruit to add solar energy, and add basil to set prosperity intentions), to foster joy and all lunar intentions try making an iced tea of strawberry leaves, add sliced berries, and a natural sweetener of choice, and finally, iced green or white tea with sliced fresh or dried fruits for health intentions. Get creative with any of these by adding your favorite herbs, preferably fresh, and even flower petals. Toast the Sun and enjoy!

  3. Gems: This week, I like Solar stones like citrine to boost energy and joy, orange calcite for motivation, peridot to honor the natural bounty of mid-summer, and carnelian for promoting the courage to take the risks to reach the highest mountain top!

  4. Practices: Solstice is all about light, and with that void-of-course Moon, it’s about dancing to our own beat. The energy is celebratory! It’s also about setting intentions for the rest of Summer and into Autumn. Given the Void Moon, I don’t want to be too directive here. Rather, I’ll encourage creativity. How can you bring more light into whatever celebrating or intention-setting you have planned? Perform your ritual under the midday Sun? Light a bonfire? Perform a candle ritual? Add sunflowers and strawberries to the ceremony? What can you do to place yourself at center stage to accept the spotlight? Be vibrant! Get quirky! Have fun!
