Roy Carroll: Why I’m Selling the Rhino Times - The Rhino Times of Greensboro (1)

Dear Readers of The Rhino Times,

As I sit down to pen this farewell article, I’m filled with a mix of emotions. It seems like just yesterday when I embarked on the journey of owning and steering this beloved publication. Yet, here we are, at the crossroads of change and transition.

I have decided to sell the Rhino Times to our long-time journalist, Scott Yost. With John Hammer transitioning into retirement, Scott approached me with some great ideas to not only keep the paper going, but to make it even more relevant. I feel it is time for someone else to lead the Rhino Times into a new generation, and there is no one better than Scott Yost.

Reflecting on the early days, I remember the trepidation I felt stepping into the role of Publisher. I jokingly assured my high school English teacher that my contributions to the paper’s content would be sparse, but little did I know the profound impact this venture would have on me personally and on the community at large.

From “The Rhinoceros Times” to “The Rhino Times,” the evolution of our publication has been nothing short of remarkable. It was a vision born out of a desire to bring a fresh perspective to the local news landscape, a vision that resonated deeply with our team and our readers alike.

I will forever be grateful to John Hammer for presenting me with the idea of buying the paper. Although I have to admit getting into the newspaper business was not one of my more financially astute decisions, I have enjoyed my time learning about this industry, and I could not have imagined going through the learning curve without John’s wisdom and guidance.

However, our journey was not without its challenges. Controversies and uncertainties loomed, but through it all, we remained dependable in our commitment to delivering quality journalism. John Hammer, Scott Yost, and our dedicated editorial staff played a pivotal role, reporting on the issues that mattered most to our community, even when it meant taking a stance that wasn’t always popular with some of my friends.

The transition from a static print publication to an interactive multimedia platform was a testament to our adaptability and innovation. Embracing the digital age, we ushered in a new era of connectivity, bringing breaking news and analysis to our readers in real-time.

I’m immensely proud of the strides we’ve made, but none of it would have been possible without the firm support of our readers. Your feedback and your engagement have been invaluable. You’ve been more than just subscribers; you’ve been partners in this journey, and for that, I am profoundly grateful.

As I remove “Publisher” from my long list of job titles, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and a sense of optimism for the future. The Rhino Times may be changing hands, but its spirit, its commitment to truth and integrity will endure.

To our loyal readers, thank you for allowing us the privilege of serving you. Your trust has been the greatest treasure of all.

God Bless,

Roy E. Carroll

      Roy,
Many thanks for preserving the voice of reason and common sense in Greesboro in contrast to vast majority of media today which is so blatantly biased and liberal. FOX, WSJ and Rhino are the only places where unbiased news and commentary can be found.
I trust Scott will be able to contune this in the absence of you and John!
      Thanks, Dixon Johnston

PS: I hope you, Steve and the team have a safe and successful Ferrari Challenge season!

      Congrats Scott!

Consider adding some podcasting content…maybe in the old “As Irving Park Turns” vein…but focused on Downtown.

This was the blurb right under the headline in today’s email update:

This is just an example of errors found in the email and the articles. I just found it ironic since this particular article actually announces that Scott Yost is going to take over…

Thank you keeping us informed and up to date. This publication has done wonders for the concerned citizens of Greensboro and Cuilford County. I hope it continues to provide us with much needed truth. Help brings us all together for a greater and fair city and county.

I must confess, in my younger days I read the printed Rhino, often over lunch and just shook my head. I rarely agreed with much of what was written but I’ve always read divergent news sources. Something I wish 2024 Americans did a lot more of.

That aside, The Rhino has been about the only news source I’ve used for local news for a long time. I’m glad you all kept it alive and I’m glad Scott will carry the torch. Well done folks! This is from a fairly liberal minded libertarian, who likes all sides fairly represented and a news source to report real news!

Thank you Mr Carroll for sustaining our beloved thick-skinned herbivore.
Our City would not be the same without it.
      ——-

And I fervently hope that Scott understands there’s more to this only journalistic organ in Guilford county than updates on the Airport and the animal shelter.
“THE RHINO” earned its success through muckraking journalism.
It’s time to get your hands dirty, Scott.
And know that I wish you the best.
      The Rhino has to survive.

From one generation to the next. And that’s the way it goes. Good, luck Scott.

I would suggest that people would be more civil to each other. As it would be if we were in a room together. And try to get comments from people with different views.

Amazing how a publication doesn’t have to be a behemoth to far outshine what passes for a city’s
newspaper of “Record” that really lacks in journalism.

Thank you, Mr. Carroll, Mr. Hammer, and Mrs. Hammer for the work you’ve done over the years to provide news from Guilford County, Greensboro, and NC that most news media didn’t share with us. Mostly, I appreciate your providing a platform for discussion whether signed or anonymous, so people could share opinions or information without fear of retaliation. Those comments often led to great news stories and results. It always led to lively reading.

Scott, I do expect more news coverage to be paid to penguins at the zoo, which has been lacking lately.

I’m glad the publication is continuing. But I hope it becomes a bit edgier and hard-hitting in the future. The past few years Rhino has seemed more middle of the road and truthfully, a bit lame, unlike the old Rhino which seemed to enjoy annoying the city’s power brokers and liberal politicians. Perhaps under new ownership the editors can feel free to take off their gloves and hit harder.
