We can only speak if we have knowledge about the topic. And if we know well about the topic, simplicity comes on its own. Clarity and straightforwardness help ensure that your message is easily understood and resonates with your audience.

This is bone-simple advice, but it can make a big difference in helping a mentee's new speaking situation work out well:Before your speech starts, step on stage while the room is still empty. Take a minute to look around at where your audience will be. And remind yourself: "I belong here."Decide where to focus your gaze when you talk. Also, take note of where the doors, lights and cameras are, as well anything distracting. That way, when your speech begins, you'll feel settled in. You'll be able to concentrate on the substance of your talk, rather than feeling bewildered by your setting.

One thing I've found impactful about public speaking is that you are first what you speak. Secondly, public speaking is an art and reflection of who you are. Your audience would always reads meaning to what you say and how you say it, so while speaking you have to first understand your audience to know the right approach to address them. Lastly, be creative about your interaction and also give your audience the room to picture themselves through what you say.

2 Proporcionar comentarios constructivos

Constructive feedback is a valuable tool to help mentees improve their public speaking skills. It is supportive and aimed at helping the mentee improve. A constructive feedback provides information about what was done well, areas that need improvement and suggestions for how to make those improvements.

I like to focus on what's working and helping people be aware of their strengths. When I provide suggestions of improvements I like to be very specific and show how the ending can be stronger, or where they need to provide an example, or where they need to shorten a paragraph, or how the beginning can improve, whatever the suggestion may be.

Like any other skill, practice makes you better. I encourage my students to ask for opportunities and also ask them to participate in events where they will speak. They need to know their purpose and audience. From there, I encourage them to make the story their own, keeping in mind that different audiences may require changing things up. I advise them to write down what they will say. For some, this is bullets and others full text. They should use this to help prepare. While I would not recommend reading from a script, it is acceptable to keep some notes with you when you speak. Granted, many of the instances I am referring to are only short remarks and not long speeches.

Public speaking isn’t just about giving a speech, or seminar or being a presenter in another context. Public speaking is about having the confidence to share an idea or voice an opinion to a group of people who you may or may not know already. Take every opportunity to do this as practice. Ask questions in meetings and events you attend. Practice having the confidence to develop and ask pertinent questions - even challenging questions - to people who are going to have different opinions to you. Get used to receiving questions back and being put on the spot. You will learn to express yourself in a way that responds to the audience. Do this and you will find speaking to an audience on something you have prepared well much easier.

It's easy to get discouraged and loose confidence when starting out, so help your mentee learn consistency. Encourage them to set realistic practice goals and hold themselves accountable for achieving them.-Encourage regular practice, even without immediate validation.-Focus on the value of "baby steps" and incremental progress.-Applaud the act of "doing the work" itself, not just outcomes.-Shift their focus from external validation to celebrating their own progress. Remind them that external validation will follow growth and dedication. Mastery takes time and stumbles are natural. As you do so, you will help your mentee not only in refining their public speaking skills but in fostering a healthy self-image and confidence as well.

Try this: record your pitches. It's like having a mirror that talks back. Start by writing a script that really speaks to your audience. Make it engaging and on-point. Once you've got that down, hit record. This isn't just about watching yourself later (though that's super important). It's about feeling the vibe of giving a speech, without the whole room-staring-at-you part. After you've watched your own pitch, show it to people you trust. Ask them to be real with you. What worked? What didn't? Did you nail the message? How's your body language? This part is gold. You get all these different viewpoints, which is awesome for tweaking your style. Keep at it – record, review, refine. Each round makes you sharper, and more confident.

4 Compartir consejos y recursos

From my own experience, I noticed that if I am getting nervous, or worse, not confident in my topic or my ability to deliver the content, it's usually because I am focusing on myself: how will they perceive me, will they think I am stupid, or how do I look? When these negative thoughts begin to happen, I catch myself with this phrase: "It's not about me, it's about the audience. It is about them understanding the topic and my passion for it and it's for the audience to be touched, moved or inspired. It's not about me". Do that effectively each time you present and I think your presentation will improve, and you speak with more confidence and passion for the audience getting the message.

Adam Grant, the Wharton psychologist and widely read author, has a great piece of advice when it comes to feeling nervous before giving a presentation. He points out that it's very hard to transform natural nervousness into a state of calm. But it's much easier to switch nervousness into a strong level of excitement and engagement. So rather than trying to calm yourself down before giving a big presentation, embrace your rapid heartbeat, etc. -- and look for a way to make it more of an upbeat factor rather than a downer.

Hi John, in my experience, writing and not delegating the preparation of the presentation helps. Also seeing the room and set up, visualization of your movements, practicing the hand motions you will use. Then practice scanning the room to make eye contact but instead of too fast, focus on speaking one thought to each person then moving on. Finally, going into a bathroom or other room immediately before the presentation and get pumped up to give an outsized performance, recognizing that if you think you are too big, verbose, you will appear normal size to the audience.

I suggest you co-write a speech/presentation with your mentee with a heavy focus on their performance of all or most of the necessary research, writing and rewriting. Assist them in annotating the presentation highlighting a few nuanced nuggets of information, finding places where humor is appropriate, and conducting a dry run of the presentation. On the day of the presentation remind them that due to their efforts, at that point and time they know as much or more than most of the audience. And of course, using an old trick, as they are about to start tell them to “imagine the audience sitting in their most basic underwear…..no one is intimidating in their Monday no so finest.”Knowledge is power and preparation is king/queen!

Pull your mentee closely whenever you deliver a speech. As humans, we tend to pick up things more easily when we see it being done. By watching you work, your mentee will likely pattern their mindset, approach, and mannerisms after yours. It is therefore crucial for you as a mentor to anchor speaking engagements often with your mentee watching and learning.
