Albert Raymond "A.R." Sheets, age 24, of North Tazewell, Va., died Friday, January 27, 2012 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, Va. Born November 21, 1987 at Tazewell, Va., he was the son of Carl and Lavonda Kidd Sheets of Tazewell, Va. He was a proud and loving father. He was currently employed at Wendy's in Tazewell, Va. His maternal grandparents, Albert and Lucy Kidd; and his paternal grandparents, Raymond and Frances Sheets preceded him in death. In addition to his parents, he is survived one son, A.J. Sheets of North Tazewell, Va.; one sister, Brandi Sheets of Tazewell, Va.; Tonya McGuire who was like a sister to him and her son, Keenon; niece, Baylee Sheets; nephew, Jace White; several cousins, aunts, and uncles who will also miss him so much. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Reverend Kelvin Seabolt officiating. A prominent community, business and civic leader of Princeton, Mr. Andrew Lewis "Andy" Clark Sr., 89, of Indian Rocke, Princeton, died early Thursday morning, January 13, 2011 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born May 19, 1921 at Mt. Hope, he was the son of the late Elmer and Hettie Craddock Clark. Mr. Clark was a graduate of Mt. Hope High, and West Virginia University, School of Engineering in 1947. He served his country proudly during World War II with the Signal Corps. as a 1st Lieutenant, while serving in the Pacific with the U.S. Army. Mr. Clark was an outstanding athlete both in high school and college, playing on the WVU varsity football team for three years. Mr. Clark is president of Mercer Motors and of Andy Clark Ford & Lincoln of the Courthouse Road in Princeton. Mr. Clark was the former President of the Prince Corporation (Princeton Shopping Center), a past Director of Princeton Bank & Trust Company, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Va., Fifth District. Mr. Clark was a prominent figure in Southern West Virginia and the region. Mr. Clark was an invaluable member of the Princeton Community Hospital Board of Directors serving as President of the Board from 1973 until 1981. He served on the Board of Directors for WVU Alumni Association for many years. He was past president of the Princeton Chamber of Commerce, the Princeton Athens United Way, the Princeton Industrial Development Corporation, West Virginia Auto Dealers Association, the East River Volunteer Fire Department, the Ford Dealers Advertising Fund and the Ford Dealers Council. Mr. Clark was appointed to the West Virginia Board of Regents for High Education in July of 1975. Mr. Clark served in the West Virginia House of Delegates for two terms, from 1952 until 1956. He was elected as a Delegate to the National Democratic Convention 1964 and 1968. Mr. Clark had been honored by numerous organization, civic groups and colleges and universities. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Caroline Brown "Brownie" Clark; a son, Andrew L. "Drew" Clark Jr.; along with his sister, Elizabeth Spheen; and a brother, Elmer Clark. Survivors include two children, Terry Alston Clark Graham and husband Rick, George William "Scooter" Clark; daughter-in-law, Colleen Witt Clark, all of Princeton; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. A celebration of Mr. Clark's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 15, 2011 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Father William Armstrong officiating. Barkley Crabtree "B.C." Umberger died October 3rd, 2013 at his home. He was born October 23rd, 1923 in Wythe County. B.C. graduated from Wytheville High School in 1941 when he started his trucking career. In 2011, he received the Golden Achievement Award from the American Truck Historical Society for being in the trucking business for over 50 years. He was a lifelong farmer. He was in the dairy business for over 50 years. In 1976 he began processing and selling milk produced from his own farm. In 1969, he built Tri-State Livestock Market. In 1970, he was cofounder of Wythe Raceway. He was owner of Sand Mountain Sand and Umberger Ready Mix Concrete. For 65 years his passion was buying cattle and shipping west to feed lots. He is preceded in death by his parents, T.O. Umberger and Nellie Crabtree and a brother, Owen Umberger. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Hayton Umberger, of Wytheville; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Samuel Boyer, of Rural Retreat, Amy and Larry Martin, of Wytheville; sons and daughters-in-law, Sammy and Jackie Umberger, Danny and Jane Umberger, all of Rural Retreat; sister, Aleen U. Niday, of Bland; brother and sister-in-law, Ned and Martha Umberger, of Wytheville; 17 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral service will be Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. in the Holy Advent Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Harvey Atkinson with the interment in the Mt. Billy Joe "B.J." Cook 77 of Abbs Valley Road, Bluefield, VA went to be with his Savior on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family. B.J. was born on Monday, November 09, 1936 in Hatcher, WV to the late Dr. Ted "T.R." Cook and Lillian Cooke Cook. He was a member of the Abbs Valley Baptist Church in Abbs Valley, VA and a member of Rescue 945. B.J. was a retired parts salesman with Andy Clark in Princeton and Pep Boys Automotive in Delaware. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers Jimmy Cook, Donnie Cook and Teddy Ray Cook Jr.; one sister Leah Cook Mathena and a nephew Todd Cook. Survivors include: His wife of 28 years, Linda Way Cook of the home. Granddaughter: Faith Powers of the home. Five Daughters: Donna Maria McFee and husband Ed of Delaware, Valerie Diane Stump of Texas, Melanie Kay Brown of Texas, Janice Marie Johnson and husband Tim of Pocahontas, VA, Jeri Lynn Powers and husband Shane of Abbs Valley, VA. BLUEFIELD, Va. - William Mack "Bill Mack" TRZN Goodman, 69, of Riverbend Estates, Bluefield, VA, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2015 at his home. Born on January 17, 1946 in McDowell County, he was a son of the late Andrew Jackson and Helen McCormick Goodman. He had been a resident of Bluefield for 10 years and was a graduate of Gary High School and Bluefield State College. He was a certified mining electrician and retired coal miner with 37 years of service. He was of the Methodist faith and was a veteran of the US Army. Survivors include: Wife of 48 years: Wanda Warren Goodman of the home; 2 daughters: Sara "Beth" Goodman of Hudson, NC, Cassandra "Candi Jo" Greer of Lenoir, NC; 4 granddaughters and 5 great-grandsons. Ernest "Speedy "Blankenship, 76, of 1119 Old Bramwell Rd., Bluefield was welcomed by Jesus to his new home on June 12, 2014. Born in Grundy, VA, July 29, 1937. He was the son of the late Nina Blankenship-Moore of Falls Mills and Clellie Blankenship of Pike, KY. He has been a resident of Bluefield for 60 years and was employed with the West Virginia Water Company for 29 years where he was known as "Speedy". After retirement he enjoyed working on lawn mowers and doing small engine repair. When he took time to relax his favorite things to do were watch John Wayne movies and sit on his front porch with his many friends and reminisce. He is preceded in death by his two sons David Lee and Michael Dwayne Blankenship. Left to cherish his memories are his wife Brenda C. Blankenship, three daughters Katherine Vaughn and her better half Robbie Perry of Scottsville, VA, Darlene Gilley and Melissa Blankenship of Bluefield, VA. "Bill" Blankenship (Blue Wolf), 76, of Skeen Lane, Princeton died Tuesday evening, August 9, 2016 at Princeton Community Hospital surrounded by his family and his Pastors Larry White & Ryan Meadows.Born December 30, 1939 at Abbs Valley, VA, he was the son of the late Roy & Pearlie Blankenship. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his first wife Lois Blankenship.Bill was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served with the U.S. Army. FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. - Mr. Robert B. "Bob" Allen, age 84, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Friday morning, May 1, 2015 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville. Born in McComas, WV, he was the youngest and last living of seven children born to the late Archer and Alvirdie Elizabeth Mills Allen. Mr. Allen grew up in the coal mining hills of West Virginia. During his Junior High School years he met Ella Sue Sizemore, who lived across the mountain from Bob. Until becoming old enough to drive, he would walk across the mountain to court his future wife. In 1949, Mr. Allen graduated from McComas High School. After high school, he worked in the coal mines for a short time before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1950. In 1951, he and his high school sweetheart wed. Upon being discharged in 1954, he enrolled at Concord College and later attended Marshall University where he majored in Biology and minored in Health Science. After graduating college, he taught Biology and coached at Matoaka High School. In 1962, Mr. Allen moved his wife and their two children to Maryland just outside Washington, D.C. He continued teaching as a Physical Education Teacher at Walden Woods Elementary School and James Madison Middle School in Clinton, MD until retiring in 1983. During his teaching years, he coached for several local high schools, Boys & Girls Club and American Legion Basketball and Baseball teams, leading his teams and the area's athletes to many victories and titles. While at Walden Woods, Mr. Allen produced an annual tumbling show which was always standing room only over several evenings to accommodate all those who wanted to attend. He was well-loved by his students and he touched many lives in a positive way. During the late 1960s and until the mid-1970's, Mr. Allen owned Esso / Exxon gas stations in Southeast Washington, DC. In 1989, Mr. and Mrs. Allen made their new home on Amelia Island, Florida. He was an avid horse race fan and especially enjoyed the activities of the Derby and Downs. He continued to be avid sports fans and followed Marshall Football. He loved working crossword puzzles with his grandson Casey each morning. He also enjoyed dancing in his younger years and even won a jitterbug contest with his late wife. Mr. Allen's wife passed away in 2013. Their son, Robert B. Allen had passed away in 2006. He leaves behind their daughter, Karen Dotson and her husband, Jerry, Fernandina Beach, FL; two grandchildren, Anthony Allen, Boca Raton, FL, Casey Dotson, Fernandina Beach, FL; a great-granddaughter, Jaylene Allen; brother-in-law Richard M. Mosrie, Jr. and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 8, 2015 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard Funeral Home with his nephew, Ronald Dunford, officiating. WELCH - Robert "Bob" Kowaleski, 67, of Welch WV, passed away suddenly, Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at his residence. Born November 30, 1947, He was the son of the late William J. and Stella Groski Kowaleski. He was raised Catholic and Attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Powhatan WV, in later years he attended the Methodist Church in Welch. Bob was an avid fisherman and enjoyed riding his Harley. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a 1967 graduate of Northfork High School. He worked at Semet- Solvey at Caples WV, U.S. Steel in Gary WV, and retired in 2010 from Platnick Steel and Engineering in Bluefield VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, his Maternal Grandparents, Stanley and Michelene Groski, and Paternal grandparents, Joseph and Stella Kowaleski, and one brother Stanley Kowaleski. BLUEFIELD - Cloy Dewayne "C.D." Price, age 70, of Lakeland Drive, Bluefield, WV died on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Christian Hands Adult Care in Princeton, WV. Born on July 27, 1944 in Weston, WV, he was a son of the late Rev. Haywood C. and Muriel L. Turner Price. He had lived in Bluefield since 1964 and was a retired salesman for the Dove Sign Company. He was a US National Guard Veteran and was a member of the New Salem United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Keith Shrader, II; a brother, Clarence Ray Price; and a sister, Barbara Shrout. PRINCETON - Denver B. "D.B." Echols, Jr., 83, of Princeton, died Friday, July 1, 2011. Born March 25, 1928 at Rock, he was the son of the late Denver Bennett Echols, Sr. and Mary Ethel Shrewsbury Echols. Mr. Echols was a member of Carr Memorial United Methodist Church in Glenwood. He was in retail business most of his life and was manager of Cheds in Princeton for many years. He retired from the WV Dept. of Highways in Princeton. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. In previous years his hobby was CB radio and was known as "Bossman." In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Lee Maxine Bailey Echols in 2000; one brother, Robert Echols; and three sisters, Lula Mae Lacy, Faye E. Bailey and Mary Brown. Survivors include three daughters, Jannell Hill and her husband Floyd of Romney, Melva Allen and her husband Barry of Princeton and Kimberly Otey and her husband Timothy of Roanoke, Va.; and one sister, Sue Mackey of Princeton; six grandchildren, Michelle Hill of Kernersville, N.C., Dustin Allen of Princeton, Shannon Wean of Stephens City, Va., Stacy Sheets of Princeton, Montana Otey of Roanoke, Va., and Nathan Otey of Roanoke, V.; and two great-grandchildren, Landon Belcher of Kernersville, N.C. and Hayden Wean of Stephens City, Va. He was born in Flint, Michigan and was the son of Claude and Bobbye Jean Fugate Cummins of Pulaski, Virginia. He was a class of 1974 graduate of Tazewell High School. Mr. Cummins was an employee of Volvo Corporation of Dublin, Virginia and had lived in the Pulaski area for 20 years. He was a member of U.A.W of Dublin, Virginia. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him. Elmer "Dale" Conner, 72, of Christiansburg, Va., went to be with our Lord on Friday, November 11, 2011, following a brave battle with cancer. Born September 21, 1939 in Giatto, W.Va., he was the son of Gracie Conner of Radford and the late Elmer "Eli" Conner. Dale grew up in Giatto, where his father taught him to love the game of baseball. An avid player, he continued his play internationally while serving his country. Dale proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, honorably discharged in 1963. He worked for Watkins Trucking in North Carolina and volunteered his time to care for local children. He was a former member of Maple View Church of Christ in Bluefield and avid West Virginia Mountaineer fan. During recent years, he relocated to Virginia to care for his loving parents. Dale was preceded in death by his father and sister, Jeanie Conner Miano. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Nancy Conner of Christiansburg, Va.; son, Troy Lee Conner Malone of Tennessee; daughter, Debra Anne Conner Shannon of Florida; stepsons, David Wayne Sowers of Virginia, and Jerry Michael Pettrey of New Mexico; and nieces and nephews, Anthony Miano, Gina Miano, Marc Miano, and Michelle Miano Valentine. Edward Lake "E.L." Wimmer, 85, of Moonglow Drive, Lerona, died peacefully late Thursday night, Aug. 9, 2012 at his son's home. Born Jan. 18, 1927, at Black Oak Hollow near Princeton, he was the son of the late Sidney H. Wimmer and Eva Jane Morehead Wimmer. E. L. was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. He had spent more than 37 years of his life in and around the coal industry, having retired as a heavy equipment operator for Perry-Hylton Coal Company, Beckley, W.Va. and was a member of the UMWA. E.L. was a member of Mt. Jackson Baptist Church in Athens. While his health permitted, he was a member of the Glory Bound Singers, having sung in area churches, family reunions and camp meetings, not only did he love good gospel music, he truly love going to church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the his love of his life, his wife, Bertie Lou Alvis Wimmer, along with four brothers; Lawrence, Bernard, Robert and Harlan Wimmer and two sisters; Evelyn Smith and Ruth Sigmon. Survivors include his two sons and their spouses, Edward Lee and Phyllis Wimmer of Lerona, Timothy Wayne and Beulah Wimmer of Princeton; two grandchildren, Jason Lee Crawford and Anita Jo Tatum; three great-grandchildren, London Marie Tatum, Ruby Nicole Tatum, and Audrianna Ashley Crawford; three sisters, Virginia Sargent of Glenwood, Berneice Cunningham of Speedway, Betty Jo Snider and husband, Mason, of Speedway; and a host of nieces and nephews; his special caregivers, Sonya Washington Cooper, who gave all of her love she had to him each day, and Amy Phillips. QUITMAN, Miss. - Grover Clifton "G.C." Barnette, age 52, of Quitman, Miss., formerly of the Dix Creek community in Tazewell County, Va., died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Meridian, Miss. Born January 15, 1958 in Hinesville, Ga., he was the son of Edith J. Beavers of Baptist Valley, Va. and the late Ernest Barnette. Mr. Barnette was of the Catholic faith. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Gulf War and retired after twenty years as Master Sergeant. In the more recent years, he worked as Public Service Manager for the Chickasawhay Gas Company in Quitman, Miss. George T. "G.T." Nelson, 62, of Straley Avenue, Princeton, died Saturday, January 14, 2012 in a small room filled with lots of love at the home of Johnny and Debbie Hodges. His death came quickly, due to pancreatic cancer. Born June 15, 1949 at Oakvale, he was the son of the late Henry Nelson and Tiney Ann Bowers Nelson. G.T. grew up in the Fountain Park area near Oakvale where he attended school. Early on in life, G.T. loved to be outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and camping. Until his death, G. T. had been a loyal and dedicated member of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton for thirty-eight years. G.T. lived a simple life; his life reflected compassion and respect for his own family as well for the many families he served daily. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his four legged companion, his dog Mike. Survivors include four siblings and their spouses, James B. Johnny Clinton "J.C." Grindstaff, 90 years of age, of Grundy, Va., went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the Wellmont-Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn., following a brief illness. Born in Williamson, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Thomas and Evelyn Montgomery Grindstaff. He was a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and was a member of the Grundy Church of Christ. J.C. served in the United States Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart. Mr. Grindstaff loved to fish and was an avid Cincinnati Reds Fan and attended the opening games for 31 straight years. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was a car foreman for N&W Railroad for 42 years. D. was also a member of the United Auto Workers Union serving as Chairman of the Shop Committee for nine years (3 terms), a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. Victor Joel "J.D." Trinidad, 43, of Quail Valley in Princeton, died Friday, May 30, 2014, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Born July 28, 1970, in the Philippines, he was the son of Dr. Victor Jose V. Trinidad, MD, and Dr. Cristina M. LeCaros-Trinidad, MD of Princeton. A true renaissance man, Joel was an artist, a writer an avid reader; he played piano and guitar, cooked gourmet meals, worked best with his hands and became a self-taught master of fine carpentry. He loved a good story, he enjoyed life, especially when around the people he loved dearly. He loved his little sisters Vivian and Christine. He thought the world of them and was so very proud of them! But just like a big brother, he worried about them. If you met Joel you loved him instantly and he loved you back unconditionally. J.W. had been a 50 + year member of the Harmon Masonic Lodge in Bluefield, Virginia, Past Master of Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in Virginia. James Edward "J.W." Ward GAITHERSBURG, Md. - James Edward "J.W." Ward, age 66 of Gaithersburg, Md., formerly of Canebrake, W.Va., passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Bedford Memorial Hospital in Everett, Pa. He was born June 13, 1946 to the late James Ellis Ward and Cora Faye Hodges Ward formerly of Canebrake, W.Va. James was a US Navy veteran. He worked as a welder and sign fabricator. He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3509 of Gaithersburg, Md. His interests were football, golf, fishing, darts, shuffleboard, and he participated in many tournaments. He enjoyed singing and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was loved and will be missed. Jimmie B. "Jim Bo" Lester, 84, of Rural Retreat, Va., passed away early Wednesday, November 2, 2011 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born on June 8, 1927 in West Virginia, the son of the late Blaine and Maxie Keen Lester. Jimmie was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Eugene Keen Lester; sons, Berlin Junior Lester, Bennie Lester; a daughter, Truby Blankenship; also several brothers and sisters. Wanda "Joyce" Martin, 75, of Heritage Hall, Tazewell, Va., formerly of Pocahontas, Va., passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Heritage Hall. Born July 10, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Violet Shrader Jennings and Homer Jennings. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronnie Jennings and Roger Jennings. Joyce is survived by two brothers, Buddy Jennings of Pocahontas, Va. and Johnny Jennings (Shirley) of Boonville, N.C.; three sisters, Juanita Pendergrass of Bluefield, Va., Connie Jennings and Kathy Harless (Kelly) of Pocahontas, Va.; three nieces and two nephews. Joyce's working career was in retail where she was cashier at various stores in North Carolina and Ohio. She was a volunteer for Clinch Valley Community Action with twenty years of service. Luther Estil "L.E." Franklin, 87, of Tannersville, Va., died peacefully on Thursday, September 30, 2011 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va. Born March 7, 1924 in Iaeger, W.Va., he was the son of the late Luther and Grace Pressley Franklin. He graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1943 and worked in the coal mines before attending Lees McGrae in Banner Elk, N.C. to learn the skill of woodworking. He was a World War II Veteran and served in the South Pacific. He retired from Bailey Lumber Company in Bluefield, W.Va. and was an excellent cabinet maker and carpenter. He was a member of Wesleys Chapel United Methodist Church in Tannersville, Va. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Clara Franklin, Betty Franklin Schlachter, and Lucy Pressley Frazier. She was married to the late James "Jim" Garfunkle Farmer, for a blessed 46 years. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Long Point Baptist Church in Spencer's Curve. She was also associated with the Leckie Pentecostal Holiness church in Leckie, WV. She was a loving wife, wonderful mother and an awesome grandmother. She worked at the Celenease Plant and Maiden Form. But the job she loved began when she became a wife, mother and homemaker. She had been a resident of McDowell County for most of her life. "Faith, Hope, and Love" were the words surrounding Mable's bed in the I.C.U. unit of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., where her death occurred Friday, December 2, 2011. Mable was born September 25, 1930 in Ingleside, W.Va. to the late Carson Brown and Fannie Jones Brown. She was a resident of the Williby Farm Road in Oakvale and had been a lifelong resident of the area. Mable was a retired cook at Princeton Community Hospital Snack Bar with 10 years of service and also served as an aid at Oakvale School with the Green Thumb Service for many years. She was an active member of the Oakvale United Methodist Church and was known as the "Champion Chili Maker" at the church for any fund raising or church event. She always had a pot of beans or soup on her stove and welcomed anybody to stop by. The greatest annual event that she looked forward to was the Brown-Williby Reunion held at her home near her birthday around the 25th of September. Mable will be remembered as the "Grand Matriarch" of the reunion and also prided herself as the best "Cake Maker" for any cake walks in the area. In addition to her parents, her husband, Henry Dale Williby; two brothers, Buford Brown and Harvey "Dude" Brown; and five sisters, Sadie Smith, Elizabeth Clifton, Reba Brinkley, Katie Brown and Marilyn Brown preceded her in death. Harry C. "Mr. Hollywood" Dolbow Sr., age 69, of Ballard, passed away Monday, September 12, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital, Lynchburg, Va. Born May 31, 1942 at Bridgeton, N.J., he was the son of the late Warren Lewis Dolbow Sr., and Caroline Ruth Wolbert Dolbow. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Harry Dolbow Jr. Harry was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. He worked at Mannington Mills in New Jersey, and at Bridgeton Dye and Finishing for 10 years. He moved to West Virginia in 1979 where he was employed by the West Virginia Dept. of Highways at the Peterstown State Road Garage. He was a member of the National Guard Unit located at Hinton, W.Va. until 1983. Mr. Hollywood enjoyed hanging out at the Dairy Queen in Rich Creek, Va., which he called his office. He loved deer hunting, going to Kirks in Hinton to feed the ducks, and watching wrestling with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Florence E. Roger K. "Old Man" Neely, 68, of Hilltop Drive in Princeton, died Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va. with his family by his side. Born December 25, 1944 in Mercer County, he was the son of Helen Marie Thompson Neely of Adair's Run, Kellysville and the late Kenton Neely. He was a 1962 graduate of Oakvale High School and had been a resident of this area most of his life. Roger was an expert bulldozer operator as well as other heavy equipment for over fifty years while his health permitted. He loved the outdoors, especially going to the mountain at Pigeon Creek with his friends. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one sister, Judy Ann Perdue in June 2011. Wallace Gray "P.I." Yates, age 93 of North Tazewell, VA passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 at his daughter's home. Born April 2, 1921 in Tazewell County, VA, he was a son of the late Charles Robert and Janie Ireson Yates Robins. Mr. Yates was a US Army veteran of World War, II. During his working years, he was employed at General Instrument and North Tazewell Elementary School. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Chapel at North Tazewell, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Edna Neel Yates who died June 20, 2014; two brothers, Charles "Pap" Ireson Yates and Billy Joe Yates; three sisters, Eula Mae Pruett, Rosaline Holcomb, and Martha Taylor. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Debbie and Ronnie Puckett of North Tazewell, VA; grandchildren, Amy and Chuck Greer and Sarah and Brandon Matney all of Tazewell, VA; great grandchildren, Dylan and Madeline Greer; and many precious brothers in law, sisters in law, extended family members and friends. Dr. Clarence V. McCall, Jr. "Papa", 80, of Athens, GA passed away Monday, December 16, 2013. A native of Broadford, VA, Dr. McCall was the son of the late Clarence V. McCall, Sr. and Lovella Whitley McCall and was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Warren McCall and sister, Eleanor Jean McCall. A lifetime of a deep love for learning and education began in elementary school in North Tazewell, VA. Life as a coal-mining family was not easy and he often went to school barefoot, but nothing would deter his natural love of knowledge. After high school, he attended Hiwassee College in Madisonville, TN; a Methodist college where he would later return and proudly teach for 36 years. Numerous times named Teacher of the Year, Alumnus of the Year, Board of Governors, and Emeritus Board of Governors (by unanimous vote). Hiwassee College and teaching were his proudest career accomplishments. Dr. McCall also attended Emory and Henry College and later, Candler School of Theology at Emory University. A lifelong Methodist with a deep and abiding faith, he served churches in Tennessee for 7 years, but education called again. He returned to Hiwassee College and began his teaching career in 1964. Dr. McCall married the love of his life, Ella Casey, on January 23, 1954, while a student at Emory and Henry College. Through years of school, serving churches, teaching, traveling, birth of 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren, they were never apart. Papa's family was his proudest personal accomplishment. Papa leaves behind a loving wife, Ella McCall; 2 daughters, Jane Killeen and husband, Mike and Anne Forrester and husband, Greg; 3 grandchildren, Patrick Forrester, Joseph Killeen, and Shelley Killeen; brother, Morris McCall; sister, Nancy Jackson, nieces, nephews, and other family members; countless friends, former students, and colleagues, all touched by a wonderful man. NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. - Paul V. "Paul-Paw" Brewster, age 74 of North Tazewell, VA died Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. He was born December 14, 1940 at Logan, WV and was a son of the late Dow and Sallie Curry Brewster. Paul was a Graduate of George Wythe High School and had retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation as an engineer, after many years of service. Mr. Brewster was a member of the North Tazewell Lion's Club, Tazewell Masonic Lodge #62, O'Keeffe Royal Arch Chapter #26 of Royal Arch Masons in VA, Clinch Valley Commandery #20 of Knights Templar in VA, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #187 in Tazewell, VA and several other community organizations. Paul was a member of the Tazewell Christian Church in Tazewell, VA where served as Elder, sang in the choir and was a member of the Disciple Men's group. After retiring you could see him around Tazewell selling mops and brooms for the Lion's Club or selling tickets for various events. Paul was an avid sports fan; his favorite teams were: the Virginia Tech. Hokies, Washington Redskins and the Cincinnati Reds. He was a loving husband, friend and brother who will be greatly missed. LINDSIDE - Dwight "Shorty" Hazelwood passed away after a short, unexpected illness at Roanoke Memorial Hospital with his wife by his side, Monday, December 8, 2014. He was the son of the late Billy K. Hazelwood and Edna Dent Hazelwood of Elgood, WV. He was preceded in death by one brother, Barry Hazelwood, one sister, Marsha Bledsoe, and one nephew, Corey Hazelwood. Dwight spent his life as a professionally skilled carpenter, building many homes in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Riner, Dublin, Pearisburg, Radford, and a few in WV. He began work at AEP in Glen Lyn, then worked as a machinist. He then began his construction career at the age of 21 with Superior Homes in Princeton. He then worked with Phillips Construction of Lerona and Ballard Construction of Pearisburg before starting Hazelwood Construction in 1986. He was a perfectionist and a teacher at his trade, making him highly respected by the many loyal friends he gained throughout his career. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 32 years, Drema Booth Hazelwood; Son Daniel and wife Tanya of Ronceverte; daughter Tonya Calfee and husband Aaron of Paint Bank, VA; grandson Carter Calfee; granddaughter Allyston Calfee; step-granddaughter Madison Meadows and husband Kenny; step-grandson Tanner Sizemore; step-great-granddaughter Violet Meadows. Surviving brothers are Jimmy and wife Margaret of Peterstown, Stewart and wife Jane of Rich Creek, Danny and wife Barbara of Princeton, Jeff and wife Kay of Princeton, David of Elgood. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews by marriage, great-nieces, and great-nephews. In addition to working hard, Dwight enjoyed Nascar, hunting, being active outdoors, and restoring '55 Chevy cars. His two grandchildren were the loves of his life and he lived to spend time with them. He deeply loved and supported his son and daughter and was a loving provider for his wife and family. He also leaves behind many working friends and hunting buddies whom he cared for very much. He came to know Christ as his personal Savior on Mother's Day 1996. Deeply loved by his friends and family, he was a kind-hearted, funny, hard-working man who was full of love, life, strength, and determination. He taught those he encountered to strive for perfection and live life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed. William T. "W.T." Buchanan III, age 81, of the Thompson Valley Community in Tazewell, Va., died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, W.Va. Born March 9, 1931 in Thompson Valley, Va., he was a son of the late William Thompson Buchanan Jr. and Martha Alice Thompson Buchanan. Bishop, Sr. (Dick), 84 of Bluefield WV passed away at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Friday December 29, 2017.Born in Richmond, Indiana he was the son of the late Gene and Catherine Bishop.In addition to his parents, he was reunited with his high school sweetheart and loving wife Angie whom were married 53 years before her passing in 2008.He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter Melissa Williams and great-granddaughter Kristen Williams.He served as Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force.He was retired from the Bluefield Fire Department as a Lieutenant with 25 years of service. His coworkers knew him as "Flea". Sally spent her formative years in Bluefield with her parents, sister Nancy Sipp (Tony) and her brother, Steve Yeager (Renata). She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Bluefield, graduated from Stuart Hall Episcopal School in Staunton, VA. After graduating from high school, Sally attended WVU and Concord College. As an adult, Sally had the most blessed career, being a mother to five children; Tandy Goings Stone (Mark), Robin Goings (Mary), Andrea Goings DeVito (Fred), Butch Goings (Lisa), and Sally Anne Goings Lester (Keith). She dedicated her life to her family, ensuring that her children were raised in a Christian environment and were educated. Sally was a wonderful role model to her children, who are not the legacy of everything Sally was in this life. After her children were raised, Sally returned to school at WVU Institute of Technology, became a registered nurse, and worked most of her nursing career as an adolescent behavioral nurse at Beckley ARH. Sally was a member of the Church of the Heavenly Rest, Princeton and St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Beckley. The crowning glory of her life was being Nana to her grandchildren; Samantha, Sabrina, Garrett, Ashley, Kara and Megan, and special grandchildren Katrina, Kimberly, Shelia, Joey, D'Anthony, Makalia and Izaiah. PRINCETON — Roger (Herman) Lafferty, Sr., 87, of Princeton, died Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Serenity Place in Lerona. Born August 31, 1926 at Herndon, he was the son of the late Benjamin Lloyd Lafferty and Vinnie Angle Lafferty. Mr. Lafferty was a veteran of the US Navy serving in World War II. He moved to Mercer County from McDowell County in 1976. He was of the Baptist faith and was a deacon in the Independent Church of God for 23 years. He was a member of U.M.W.A. Along with his wife, they were in the gospel music ministry for more than 30 years. They ministered at many local churches, revivals, several radio stations and at numerous funerals. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Sara Tilley, Lorene Buckhannon; and Flossie Hatcher; and three brothers, John H. Lafferty, Avery Lafferty and “Cowboy” Lafferty. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Gath-Lee Virginia Gwinn Lafferty; five children, Darlene Lusk and her husband Melvin of Cool Ridge, Roger H. Lafferty, Jr. and his wife Katie of Beaver, Michael Lafferty and his wife Joyce of Bluefield, Philip Lafferty and his wife Karla of Conover, NC and Carrie Bailey and her husband Darrell of Bluefield; two sisters, Betty Blevins of Midway and Phyllis McNeely of Beckley; one brother, Leroy Lafferty of Georgia; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. James Claude Link, Jr. (J.C.) passed away peacefully at his home in the Village of Newport, Va. on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 in the loving care of his wife of 53 years, Betsy Ross Link. J.C. was born on May 22, 1932 in Giles County, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Claude and Ida Bradley Link; and a sister, Juanita Haw. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Barry Link of Newport; two daughters and their husbands, Terri and Harry Kammer of Bluefield, Va. and Kimberly and Michael Secor of High Point, N.C.; five grandchildren, Ben Link, Hannah Link, Katherine Kammer, Caroline Kammer, and Noah Secor; two sisters and their husbands, Nancy and Allan Dowdy of Roanoke, Va. and Peggy and Bill Sword of Marion, Va.; his mother-in-law, Mary Lucas Ross of Newport; his loyal dog, Skylar; a niece and several nephews; numerous cousins; and many friends and neighbors. After two years of service in the United States Army, J.C. worked for five years at Celanese and then served as a rural letter carrier for thirty years. He held true to the postal motto that neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stayed this courier from the swift completion of his appointed rounds. J.C. also spent numerous years farming. J.C. was always there to help his fellow man. He was a founding and life member of the Newport Volunteer Rescue Squad and a life member of the Giles County Rescue Squad. He also helped form and served in the Newport Volunteer Fire Department and was a founding member of the First Christian Church of Newport and the Newport Ruritan Club. In recognition of his many years of service, J.C. was honored with the Ruritan Club’s Citizen of the Year Award in 1984 and with the Good Neighbor Award from the Village of Newport in 2004. J.C. led an adventurous life and did more than most people could ever dream. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, and was a man among men. The family received friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke, Va. Jack Leon Metcalfe, Jr. (Jay) passed away on July 1, 2010 after an aggressive battle with cancer. He was born on March 25, 1940 in Bluefield, W.Va. He was the son of the late Jack Leon Metcalfe and Eva Pasley Metcalfe. He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Winfree Metcalfe; his two daughters, Anne Kathryn Metcalfe and Sarah Cabell Metcalfe, both of San Francisco, Calif.; his son, Jack Leon Metcalfe, III; his sisters, Katherine Metcalfe Wheeler of Cambridge, Mass., and Elizabeth Metcalfe Abrams of Boulder, Colo.; and his nieces and nephews; and four grandchildren. Mr. Metcalfe served his country as a 2 Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Bay of Pigs campaign. In the late sixties he moved to the Roanoke Valley. Jay became a well known figure in the Roanoke community. Jay is remembered by his family as being loving, caring, kind, and sensitive. He loved life and people. There were no strangers in Mr. Metcalfe’s life; if he didn’t know you he made it a priority to meet you. Jay is remembered by his friends and colleagues as a great personality. He was a gracious southern gentleman. He could tell a story as big and easily as Mark Twain, and his laugh was contagious.
